Camire's Firecracker - Sweaty, Humid Sufferfest

Wakefield, RI
4th of July, 2013

4 miles.  24:14, 6:04 pace.  25th of 419.  Full results here.

This was the final running of the Firecracker 4 Miler.  Warm up run with Muddy, Ryan, Crutch, and Matthew.  Soaked in sweat early just into the warm run.

Lined up about three rows in to start.  I hung with Muddy for the first 3/4 mile, which probably means I went out too fast, eh?  We spotted our New Zealand WTAC member up about 5th place or so rounding one of the early corners.  Downhill to 1st mile split felt OK:  5:49.

Miles 2 and 3 were constantly rolling.  By the time I hit mile 2 split, I was not enjoying the sopping humid rolling race.  Mile 3 was much the same, although hearing my name called out by runners Beth, John, and others did help.  I don't usually take water on such a short race, but did twice to rinse the mouth and douse the head.  Miles 2 and 3 splits much the same:  6:11, 6:10.
Final kick to finish -
I did end up passing this guy

Final mile was uphill for a while, then flat.  Hills were all small, but just repetitive and wearing.  Finished the final mile in 5:59, overall 24:14, just 6 seconds slower than last year.

Congrats to club members Muddy, John H, and Jeff V placing in their respective age divisions.  Not easy to do in a talented deep field with sultry weather and hills.

  1. Great job Jeff, as always, but especially on an extra hot, humid one.
